The battery in an UPS system is not a maintenance-free battery. The UPS device needs to be plugged into an AC outlet or power strip with electricity, so the battery can recharge. The most common cause of a dead UPS battery is forgetting to plug in the charger.

A dead UPS battery will require you to replace it if you want your device fully functional again. There are different types of UPS batteries and you need to know what kind your device uses before you start replacing it.

There are two main types of UPS batteries, sealed lead acid (SLA) or valve regulated lead acid (VRLA). SLA batteries contain a layer of liquid inside the case, while VRLA batteries do not. The advantage with SLA is that the battery can be checked and topped up with distilled water without needing to open it. VRLA batteries do not have this safety feature.

Many UPS batteries use SLA technology. They typically contain 2% of sulfuric acid and 96% of distilled water. The remaining 2% is made up of material added to stabilize the electrolyte. The SLA battery should be fitted with caps on the top and bottom of the case for safety reasons, and these should be securely fastened when you are working with it.

Replacing a bad battery in an APC UPS device may be a simple process if you know what type your device uses. Replacing VRLA batteries on a UPS customer device may take some specialized equipment and training.
